Vitamin D

Why is Vitamin D important?
Vitamin D is important for the growth and maintenance of strong, healthy bones and for correct bone mineralisation, and is essential for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous levels. Vitamin D is also thought to have a role in maintaining a healthy immune system, healthy skin and muscle strength.

Why might I need it?
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, malnourishment and the absence of UV exposure to your bare skin can all make you susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. If you are considered to be at risk it is a good idea to get your health care practitioner to check your Vitamin D levels. If your levels are low, your practitioner can prescribe appropriate supplementation to correct the deficiency.

Can I get it from the foods I eat?
The main source of Vitamin D is sunlight on bare skin rather than diet. There are very few foods that contain significant amounts of Vitamin D and it is not possible to meet daily Vitamin D requirements through diet alone. The best food sources for Vitamin D are wild caught salmon, raw dairy like cheese and yoghurt, eggs and mushrooms. 

What are the symptoms?
Detecting a vitamin D deficiency from symptoms alone is difficult because the common symptoms are vague, such as tiredness or general aches and pains. More severe symptoms of vitamin d deficiency are pain in your bones and overall weakness and difficulty getting around. Some people may get frequent infections. It’s important to remember that some people, if not most, may never get these symptoms. This is why it’s so important to have your blood levels tested to determine your vitamin D levels. 

Why is it important to take Vitamin K with Vitamin D?

CoQ10

What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an enzyme produced naturally in the human body, found in every cell and tissue - It is an extremely powerful antioxidant that has an astounding range of applications — from increased energy levels, to improved cardiovascular and cellular health.

Why is CoQ10 important?
CoQ10 is involved in a number of biological functions including helping to produce energy, protect against free radicals, and keep cells both inside the body and in the skin healthy.

CoQ10 is: involved in energy production, antioxidant activity and supporting cardiovascular health; is a potent antioxidant that also acts in conjunction with selenium and regenerates vitamin E to protect the body from oxidative stress; is a component of the electron transport chain, essential for the synthesis of cellular energy in the mitochondria of cells; provides nutritional support for healthy heart muscle function; helps improve the body’s energy production and reserves by promoting the synthesis of ATP; is an antioxidant, which helps protect cell membranes and plasma lipoproteins, including LDL cholesterol, from free radical damage; assists in post-exercise recovery, protects the body from oxidative stress and improves recovery time following strenuous exercise.

Why might I need to supplement it?
Our ability to produce CoQ10 declines as we age. Other factors such as exercise and stress can also lower levels of CoQ10, and as a result, the ability of cells to regenerate and withstand stress decline. As we get older we may have additional requirements for CoQ10 and may benefit from supplementation. Can I get CoQ10 from the foods eat?
Although foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, grass-fed beef, sesame seeds, pistachio nuts. rainbow trout and herring are considered to be good sources of CoQ10, it has been estimated that they do not deliver enough to sustain adequate blood levels of CoQ10.

Turmeric has been used in Asia for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine. It is believed to have been first used as a dye and then later for its medicinal properties.

Why is Turmeric important?
Some of the traditional ways turmeric was used, to help support healthy digestive function, was to help stimulate and increase the flow of bile. It was traditionally used for mild digestive disturbances including flatulence and a sensation of fullness.

Why might I need it? 
Turmeric is believed to invigorate and improve blood circulation and support good liver health. Turmeric may assist in the maintenance of general well-being and is considered to have antioxidant properties. 

Can I get it from the foods I eat?
It is suggested that adding turmeric into your everyday cooking - to curries, stir fried dishes, smoothies, warm milk and even to spicy salad dressings, is good for your general wellbeing. However if you are looking for a more powerful formula to address specific issues we suggest consulting your health care practitioner who can advise an appropriate course of action and natural supplementation. 

Who should avoid it?
It is commonly suggested that Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Naturally always check with your doctor before starting any vitamin regime.
